Hundreds of pro-Israeli activists, including Berlin senator Frank Henkel, participated in a counter-protest against Al-Quds Day in Berlin, Saturday.
Scores of people held Israeli flags and banners, as they made their way from the Georg-Grosz-Platz aiming for Kranzler Eck. Henkel gave a speech at the event, and stated that he has come there "to say very clearly, that there is a historical responsibility to protect Israel, and that the territorial integrity and Israel's existence must never be questioned."
Al-Quds day, which falls on the last day of the month of Ramadan, was introduced in 1979 by late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini as a day of protest against Zionism and Israel's control of Jerusalem. Al-Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem, and Iran says the day gives them the opportunity to demonstrate their support for the Palestinians and highlight the importance of Jerusalem for Muslims.
