SOT, Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran Foreign Minister (Farsi): "Now, we are facing the US's economic terrorism. This economic terrorism is based on this illusion; you know there is a group in the US who have always told lies to the US's administration. Since the beginning of the imposing sanctions, they said that these sanctions would cause Iran's establishment to be toppled. Still, an ignorant person like Pompeo is saying to Mr. Trump that Iran's establishment will be toppled in a few months. Hence, we know he is wrong and our people are the supporter of the establishment. By the way, we might have acrimony towards the election. Definitely, we had another preference and thought that if more people were qualified, people would have more choices and presence. But, today is not the time for such objects, today is the time that we have to tell the US that their maximum-pressure policy has failed. If you want to empower my colleagues within the field of foreign policies until they could stop sanctions more seriously, we have to force the US to return to the negotiation table, not a bilateral negotiation, but the negotiation that the US left [5+1]."

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said "we have to force the US to return to the negotiation table" with the 5+1 (US, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany), during a statement to the press in Tehran, on Wednesday.
"Today is the time that we have to tell the US that their maximum-pressure policy has failed. If you want to empower my colleagues within the field of foreign policies until they could stop sanctions more seriously, we have to force the US to return to the negotiation table, not a bilateral negotiation, but the negotiation that the US left [5+1]," said Zarif.
In his statement, the Iranian foreign minister called US Secretary of State Pompeo 'ignorant.'
"Since the beginning of the imposing sanctions, they said that these sanctions would cause Iran's establishment to be toppled. Still, an ignorant person like Pompeo is saying to Mr. Trump that Iran's establishment will be toppled in a few months. Hence, we know he is wrong and our people are the supporter of the establishment."
Iran announced in May 2019 that it would partially withdraw from JCPOA, the nuclear deal which the Obama administration, Iran and the European Union signed in 2015. The Trump administration withdrew from the deal in May 2018, re-imposing sanctions on Iran.
Tensions between the two countries escalated further amid the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a US airstrike in Baghdad on January 3, and prompted Iranian missile fires on US positions in Iraq in retaliation.
