UK: No confidence vote threatens to derail Brexit - May at bruising PMQs

12.12.2018
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Theresa May said that the no confidence vote which she will face later damages Westminster's chances of withdrawing from the European Union, as she fielded questions from MPs in London on Wednesday.
Conservative Party MPs broke the 15 percent (48 member) threshold needed to trigger a no confidence vote in May earlier on Wednesday, which she will face between 6pm and 8pm GMT.
Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Kenneth Clarke described the motion as "unhelpful, irrelevant and irresponsible."
"It would mean that were a new leader to come in, one of the first things they would have to do would be to either extend Article 50 or rescind Article 50, and that would mean either delaying or stopping Brexit," May responded.
Leader of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn said the no confidence vote would have no bearing on people's lives.
"The Prime Minister has negotiated her deal, she's told us it's the best and only deal available. There can be no more excuses, no more running away, put it before the parliament and let's have the vote," he said, referring to May's deference of a vote on her Brexit deal.
An array of opposition MPs attacked May, calling on her to step down, describing the government as an "embarrassment" and saying her Brexit deal is "doomed."
