The presidents of Armenia, Azerbaikan and Russia attended a trilateral meeting on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in St. Petersburg on Monday.
The objective of the meeting is to discuss the outcome of the Vienna talks and outline further moves to resolve the conflict. Earlier in the day, President Putin met both Armenia’s Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijan’s Ilham Aliyev one-to-one in a bid to arrest the violations in the ceasefire in the disputed area.
The Russian leader started the trilateral talks by thanking the Armenian and Azeri leaders for travelling to St. Petersburg and “now we are going to speak altogether”.
The long-held ceasefire, operating in Nagorno-Karabakh since 1994, was violated on April 1 with Armenia and Azerbaijan each blaming the other for the resumption of hostilities. Shuttle diplomacy by both Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as well as others, has helped lead to a cessation of hostilities.
