Turkish police forces used tear gas and water cannons against protesters in Diyarbakir, Wednesday, after the arrest of the city's two joint mayors for alleged links to terrorism. According to local sources, more than two dozen people were arrested during the protest.
Gultan Kisanak, who became Diyarbakir's first female mayor in 2014, and Firat Anli, her co-mayor, were arrested on Tuesday.
According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the removal of elected officials accused of links to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), is part of Ankara's battle against the armed group. Kisanak is a prominent Kurdish political figure. The European Union described the arrests as "very worrying."
