Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani held bilateral talks in Ankara on Monday, prior to the fifth trilateral meeting between the Astana Process guarantor nations.
The Russian leader told Rouhani that through "our common efforts, Iranian efforts and Iran’s significant input to the settlement process in Syria, we managed to eliminate terrorist spots and to create effectively functioning arrangements for political accommodation.”
Rouhani on his part stated that Moscow remains Tehran's key ally "in the present circumstances when the Americans show signs of hegemony in the sphere of seafaring and flout the international standards."
The two leaders will be joined by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a three-way meeting to discuss the Syrian settlement.
