Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that US should abandon 'imperial ambitions' and treat Russia as an equal partner during his answer to a question on the US upcoming presidential elections at the 14th annual 'Direct Line' Q&A session in Moscow on Thursday.
"If our partners proceed to form a false belief in their exceptionalism, it will mean that they will always pretend on a special status and special rights. As some specialists say, it is a gnoseological mistake. It is necessary to attack the problem at the grass-roots and act not from the position of force, dictate and imperial ambitions, but act respectfully with all partners and of course with Russia," he said, before adding: "Without this it is impossible to create democratic international relations."
Putin stressed that Russia and US "had periods when we cooperated with each other close and actively and used to achieve very good results both at the national and international levels." The Russian leader proceeded to cite examples, stating “in such spheres as nuclear non-proliferation policy, fighting against terrorism, Iranian nuclear program, chemical weapons in Syria, fight against terrorism in general. There are other examples of positive cooperation," Russian president explained.
Putin's 'Direct Line' has become a well-established tradition throughout the years of his presidency. The event generally focuses on domestic affairs, with Putin reporting on the government's achievements while identifying existing issues. Putin's answers also touch upon international issues affecting Russia.
The 13th edition of the event in 2015 lasted for three hours and 57 minutes, with the Russian president answering a record 74 questions out of the more than three million received.
The first phone-in line with President Putin took place in 2001 when he received some 400,000 questions.
