28.02.2016
A sculpture of Alan Kurdi, the three-year-old Syrian refugee who drowned in the Mediterranean Sea last year, was unveiled on a small jetty at Azadi Park in Sulaimani earlier in February.
The sculpture, designed by Bakhtiar Halabjay, measures 3.5 metres (11.48 feet) in length and is made of marble, forming a replica of the image of Alan’s tiny lifeless body that was washed up on a beach near Bodrum on September 2, 2015. The image of Alan's dead body made global headlines and caused a worldwide outcry over the human cost of the refugee and migrant crisis.
Alan Kurdi, who was of Kurdish ethnic background, drowned along with his mother Rehen and five-year-old brother Galip, after the boat they were travelling in capsized as they were heading for the Greek island of Kos. Fleeing the conflict in Syria, they had hoped eventually to reach Canada where they were to join relatives.
