The Russian Embassy for Spain organised a commemoration at the Fuencarral Cemetery, in Madrid, Saturday, laying wreaths at the memorial for the Soviet volunteers who fought in the Spanish Civil War between 1936-1939. Ambassadors of Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan were attending the event to honour the memory of the fallen heroes and laid flowers and wreaths at the monument held for the memory of the Soviet volunteers. The attendees also commemorated the 70th anniversary of the victory over the Nazis in WWII as veterans paid tribute to the fallen Spanish and Soviet soldiers. The Spanish Civil War between Spanish Republicans and Nationalists started in 1936 and lasted until 1939, when General Francisco Franco defeated the Republican forces in a bloody three year war that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
