The CP940 Italian Coast Guard intercepted 717 refugees and migrants off the Libyan coast in the Mediterranean Sea, on Monday. The asylum seekers were on two small vessels when they were picked up by the Italian Coast Guard. Numerous Italian emergency service teams, as well as the military, took part in six separate rescue operations coordinated by Coast Guard Central Office of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. At least 1,830 people were saved during the day, officials stated. Hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean and landed on European shores in 2015 alone, with southern Europe seeing the majority of arrivals. According to UNHCR figures, Italy is currently host to an estimated 129,000 new arrivals, while the United Nations (UN) estimate that around 2,400 people have lost their lives trying to cross the Mediterranean this year.
