I think the report itself that they presented this morning just confirmed what we had already known that it did do away with other speculation of air-to-air attack or anything of the sort. I am also struck by the fact that the United States and the Ukraine still have not provided certain critical information to the Dutch authorities on the actual location from their own means. The question is then raised, is this to protect their own detection capabilities, or what? I am a little bothered by that, because we have satellites and other technical capabilities that can actually help pinpoint where the origin of the shot might have come from. The United State certainly would have that kind of information and it is my information that they have not turned that information over." Former US senior security policy analyst at the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Michael Maloof, called the Dutch Safety Board's final report into the downing of the MH17, a "very narrow report," in Washington DC, Tuesday. Maloof said that the report was inconclusive because it lacked information about the manufacturer of the missile that allegedly hit the plane; and omitted the fact that it was an old missile. He went on to say that there was no information included about the direction that the missile came from, saying he was sure that the US and Ukraine would have such information. In the final conclusion of the report Dutch Safety Board chair Tjibbe Joustra stated that the plane was struck with a 9N314M BUK missile, although this conclusion was not endorsed by all representatives of the states involved, with Russia disputing that the type of warhead can be determined with certainty. Joustra also stated that the airspace above conflict zones in east Ukraine should have been closed off by Ukrainian authorities, stating that "the risks posed to civil aviation were not adequately identified." The Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam when it was downed in the skies over eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014. All 298 including 80 children, and 15 crew members were killed.
