The Brazilians of last summers World Cup are a good analogy for the U.S. women's national team this summer, as it gears up to begin the knockout stage of the Women's World Cup next week.
If we had one word to summarize the U.S. team's performance so far, it would be: meh.
Its win over Nigeria secured the U.S. the top spot in Group D, tabbed before the tournament as the "Group of Death." So it bears repeating: The U.S. hasn't been bad; they just haven't been that good.
U.S. Coach Jill Ellis won't say as much publicly, but when asked after the Nigeria match if she's happy with where her team stands heading into the knockout stage, she sidestepped the question and offered a short reply: "I'm happy to be heading into the playoff round."
