Diggers continued carving a path towards a refugee camp in Calais on Wednesday, after police told refugees and migrants living there to move into new housing so the original camp could be destroyed.
Many of the inhabitants of the refugee camp have already moved into 125 homes formed from old shipping containers in an area adjacent to the camp. Hoverer, over 1,500 refugees have refused to move on the basis that they have not been consulted on the matter.
The containers, which can house up to 12 people each and offer electricity and heating, are aimed at improving conditions for the refugees on the north coast of France, according to the government.
Refugee supporters and campaign groups such as 'No Borders' have criticised the introduction of the container village, calling it a "concentration camp." Anti-refugee groups have also criticised the move, due to the public funds being invested in the camp.
