Violence continued to escalate on the streets of Hong Kong on Monday, as hundreds of protesters gathered at the Polytechnic University (PolyU) campus clashed with police.
Protesters wearing masks and using umbrellas as shields can be spotted throwing stones and bricks at security forces, who responded with tear gas and water cannons.
Hundreds of Hong Kong protesters have been holed up inside the Polytechnic University campus for almost a week. According to reports, those who made attempts to leave were forced back in by riot police forces with tear gas and other projectiles.
Police are said to have arrested at least 40 students trying to break through a security cordon at the university campus on Monday.
Polytechnic University has become the scene of some of the tensest confrontations between police and protesters in more than five months of unrest in the Chinese territory.
Hong Kong has been rocked by protests sparked by a now-withdrawn extradition bill since March. The rallies have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by violent clashes between protesters and the authorities.
