Europe needs to remember to "overcome boundaries without war," President of the Federal Council Volker Bouffier stated at a plenary meeting commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, in Berlin on Friday. Bouffier reminded the members of parliament of the importance of finding peaceful solutions, especially considering Europe is facing "manifold challenges," including the crisis in Ukraine. He also said that migrants should not be "fought against," but rather the causes that make people flee in the first place. Bouffier's speech concluded the special plenary meeting commemorating the defeat of National Socialism and the liberation of Europe 70 years ago. President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert and historian Heinrich August Winkler also addressed parliament, with Lammert saying that the willingness of Germany's "neighbours for reconciliation is historically as unprecedented as the catastrophe preceding it."
