SOT, George Nader, resident (Arabic): ''Today marks 100 years of the existence of Lebanon which was formed on the principle of freedom. Lebanon confirms today [this principle], displaying human freedom; [freedom of] thought and belief have come together to create one human being belonging to Lebanon, not to a sect or to a region. It is Lebanon that is celebrated today."

Thousands of Lebanese citizens marched through Beirut before converging on Martyrs' Square, Friday, to mark the 76th anniversary of Lebanese independence, with many using the opportunity to continue protests against the government.
Participants carried Lebanese flags, wreaths and balloons in the national colours, while also holding a civil parade with marching bands near the waterfront. Protesters also carried banners with political slogans, including "respect our existence or expect our resistance." Another banner read, "we have fed out independence with our blood - The day we planted it [independence] is feeding our veins again."
The ongoing demonstrations are believed to be the country's largest since 2015, as protesters have taken to the streets to voice their discontent with deteriorating living conditions, austerity measures, capital flight and the rise of the deficit and public debt.
Friday's nationwide celebrations also saw key members of the government hold a military parade in Yarze instead of the traditional Beirut, which continues to be gripped by mass protests.
Lebanon gained its independence from the French Mandate on November 22, 1943.
