A mass brawl broke out in the Kashmiri State Assembly, Thursday, after it emerged that a member of the assembly, Rashid Ahmed, served beef at a party he hosted. Cows are sacred across the majority of India, with the slaughtering of cows banned. Ahmed, a Muslim, was attacked as the news emerged. He attempted to hit back at the attackers, who were from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The move has divided India, with liberals seeing the increased religiousity as linked to the rise of Hindu Nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A man was purportedly killed for the consumption of beef in early October.
