Venezuela: Opposition rally fails to gather numbers in Caracus

17.09.2016
An opposition-organised rally in Caracas failed to bring large numbers into to capital's streets, Friday, as Venezuela's Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) coalition attempted to rally civilians against the national election board's decision to delay a referendum on whether snap elections should be held.
The MUD coalition were attempting to continue the momentum of recent protests regarding the ongoing economic crisis in Venezuela. However, the large numbers seen at recent rallies, one on September 1 which garnered one million protesters, did not turn out.
The centre-right opposition coalition has been pushing for a referendum on Maduro's leadership by the end of the year. If Maduro loses in a presidential referendum in 2017 however, his vice president Aristobulo Isturiz will replace the socialist leader until the end of the leader's presidential term, keeping opposition parties out of power until scheduled elections in 2018.
