Scuffles erupted between protesters and several deputies of Lviv City Council, Thursday, after dozens of demonstrators stormed the building, demanding justice for the recent deaths during a fire at a local landfill site.
According to a source, protesters swarmed into the council, despite National Guard and riot police officers securing the deputies’ session, with the protesters demanding an explanation about the accident. As the meeting’s participants did not bring the topic up, tensions frayed, with deputies from the Svoboda party reportedly initiating the scuffles.
Local media reports claim that security forces deployed tear gas outside the building, while the National Guard press-office confirmed that a number of people received minor injuries.
On May 28, at least four people died after a fire hit the country's largest landfill, Gribovichskaya.
The protesters believe that if there had been a waste processor in place at the time, the deaths may not have occurred, holding the town’s mayor and his underlings responsible.
Other participants in the protest were mostly parents of Ukrainian soldiers who are angry their loved ones have still not returned home after their time in service had expired.
