Algeria: NATO intervention in Libya a root cause of Euro-refugee crisis – Lavrov

29.02.2016
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov gave a brief press statement following his meeting with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika during an official visit to Algiers, Monday. Bilateral relations, fighting international terrorism, the Syrian conflict, and the situation in Libya were on the agenda of the meeting.
Lavrov stated that the most important result of the meeting was the "adherence to the principles of the strategic partnership which are included into the Declaration signed in 2001 during the official visit of President Bouteflika to the Russian Federation".
The Russian diplomat also hit out at the NATO military intervention into Libya in 2011, describing the move as an "illegal action against the Libyan government". “The consequences of that risky undertaking are still visible, especially in the Sahel region, where there are tendencies for destabilisation including militants and weapon flows from Libya,” he said, adding that “These consequences are also visible in Europe because one of the main reasons for the current crisis of illegal migrants is precisely the dissolution of the state in Libya.”
Earlier on Monday, Lavrov met with his Algerian counterpart Ramtane Lamamra. Both ministers held a protocol meeting before holding closed door-discussions, planting an olive tree outside the foreign ministry building.
