Volcanic lightning could be seen striking inside the cloud of ash generated by the eruption of the Taal Volcano on Sunday, as footage filmed from the nearby city of Tagaytay shows.
Communities in the vicinity of the volcano, the Philippines' second most active, were being evacuated after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised its eruption alert to Level 3 (magmatic unrest).
The Taal Volcano, which is part of the so-called Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' is known to have erupted at least 34 times since 1572.
