Berlin “is the loser of the night”, stated the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) General Secretary Peter Tauber on Sunday after the closing of polling stations in the capital city’s parliamentary elections.
For the first time in Berlin’s history the city could get a left-wing triple coalition government, as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party only polled 17.8 percent in the elections, while the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) remain the largest party with 22.8 percent of the votes, and the Green party shares the third place with Die Linke at 16.7 percent and 16.2 percent
During the press conference, held in CDU's headquarter at Konrad-Adenauer-Haus, Tauber blamed the Berlin SPD mayor Michael Mueller for his party’s losses in Berlin, saying the CDU could not distance itself from the “great dissatisfaction with the senate” under his leadership. Tauber added that “it is a concern that there will be a red-red-green senate”, as he believes the SPD caused some of the issues Berlin is facing today. However the General Secretary seemed to be pleased about one thing, namely the anti-immigrant party Alternative for Germany (AFD) party polling 12.2 percent. Tauber said “it is good” that the AFD made it to fifth place and “clearly did not meet its own expectations”.
The CDU however has experienced a drastic drop from 23.3 percent and is currently experiencing lowest support in Berlin's post-reunification history.
