German Chancellor Angela Merkel declined to comment on British Home Secretary Theresa May’s remarks that exit talks between Britain and the EU may not start until the end of the year, during a press conference with Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Chairman Bakir Izetbegovic in Berlin, Thursday.
"I don't want to comment on every statement. Since first there are elections within the Tory Party, we want to wait for the results," Merkel said in response to a journalist’s question, before continuing, "let's wait and see how the new government acts, and then we can evaluate it. Of course I am following the discussion, like many others, but I don't want to make any political comment on it here."
During the press conference, Merkel also discussed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the EU and Canada. Merkel stated that "we are independent when it comes to the German Bundestag to deal with this issue," and added "the vote of the German Bundestag will then play an important role in the question on how the federal government will control [CETA]."
