Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro awarded the first Hugo Chavez Peace Prize to Russian President Vladimir Putin in Caracas on Friday, while unveiling a statue of the former President of Venezuela.
"He is a fighter for peace, a fighter for the freedom of the world," Maduro said, referring to Putin, at the unveiling of a statue erected to honour the late leader and founder of Venezuela's socialist administration Hugo Chavez. Maduro believes Chavez would have wanted to "hug" the Russian leader and "have him by his side."
The Hugo Chavez Peace Price will be given out every year and winners will receive a miniature replica of the Chavez statue.
The announcement of the Hugo Chavez Award for Peace and the Sovereignty of the People came hours after Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the peace negotiations between the government and Marxist-Leninist FARC rebels.
