The Tanaro River breached its banks, Thursday, with heavy floods ripping through Cuneo in the Piedmont region following torrential rains. Worsening weather conditions have forced officials in north-western Italy to raise red alerts in Liguria and Piedmont, with yellow alerts in the Valle d’Aosta and Tuscany.
Residents attempted to veer the water away from their houses by building makeshift log dams and cleared roadside gutters to encourage quicker drainage.
President of the Piemonte Region Sergio Chiamparino stated the situation is "critical". Although there have been no reported injuries, residents have been evacuated and many shops and factories are damaged. Schools across Cuneo are also closed.
