Thousands marched through the streets of Los Angeles, Friday, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the mass killing of 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915. The march, known as the 'March for Justice', was also organised as a protest against the Turkish government for refusing to label the mass killings as 'genocide'. The six-mile (9.65 km) march began at Sunset Boulevard and Western Avenue in 'Little Armenia' and ended at the Turkish Consulate on Wilshire Boulevard. Thousands of people attended the march which was expected to be the largest event in western USA commemorating the mass killings. Los Angeles has the largest population of Armenians in the USA. Whilst the Turkish government acknowledges the mass killing of Armenians which took place 100 years ago, it denies that the act was 'genocide'. In an official statement, The Turkish Consulate in LA said that it commemorates the Armenians who died in the massacres but said that the using the term genocide would be "historically wrong and politically misused".
