Around 4,000 people gathered in Catalonia Square in central Barcelona on Monday to rally against the Catalan independence movement and to demand Spanish unity, on Spain's "national day." Under the motto "Barcelona, capital of spanishness," protesters waved national flags and chanted slogans supporting the idea of Catalonia remaining a region within Spain. Among those in attendance was a candidate of the Popular Party to the Catalan Government Xavier Garcia Albiol. Following the Catalan local elections in September, in which pro-independence parties gained a majority in the region's parliament, concerns of eventual Catalan independence are growing in some areas of the body politic. The Dia de la Hispanidad (Spanish national day) is celebrated every year on October 12 to commemorate Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas in 1492.
