The Stippefoettche dance is a famous part of the Cologne Carnival, which was in full swing on Saturday. The dance originated as a ritual that was performed by Cologne’s military guard, which is why the dance is still performed with replica muskets to this day.
To perform the Stippefoettche, dancers hold their firearm and turn away from each other, bend their knees and rub their backs against one other in time to the music.
On Saturday, Mayor of Cologne Henriette Reker joined in the festivities clad, just like the performers and crowds, in the city’s colours: red and white.
