Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was met with thunderous applause from a packed-out crowd at the Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie in Texas on Saturday.
Over 7,000 people flooded the venue, reaching nearly a thousand over its capacity. During the rally, Sanders pledged to raise the minimum wage, slamming Republican opponent Donald Trump for supporting tax breaks on the rich. He went to sarcastically comment that Trump, "as a brilliant scientist who has studied climate change, has concluded that climate change is a hoax, created by the Chinese.", and went on to joke, " I was honestly shocked to hear that because, I would have thought that he believed that climate change was a hoax created by the Mexicans or the Muslims."
Sanders also drew on some differences between himself and Hillary Clinton, who he is set to lose against in the South Carolina primary, according to exit polls. "I do not have a SuperPAC. I do not represent Wall Street, or corporate America, or the billionaire class. We do not want their money, do not need their money", he said.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is projected to win an overwhelming victory in the South Carolina Democratic primary. According to exit polls, Sanders failed to win over black democrats, who count for 61% of votes, with Clinton winning 87% of their support.
Saturday's primary is taking place ahead of 'Super Tuesday' when Democrats will vote for their favourite candidate in 11 states.
