Eleven refugees including four children were picked up by the Italian Coast Guard a few miles from the Greek island of Samos in the Aegean Sea, within the eastern Mediterranean on Tuesday, after their small boat had sunk.
Italian Coast Guard patrol boat CP 322 picked up the eleven refugees, who were in the water in two groups spread about 300 metres (984 ft) apart, with the help of a rescue swimmer and a diver.
At the request of the European border agency Frontex, Italian Coast Guard vessels continue to maintain their presence in the Greek Aegean Sea.
