Heads of State and Foreign Affairs ministers from the South American countries gathered in Montevideo on Tuesday to take part in a Mercosur meeting.
In his address delivered to fellow delegates, Argentine President Mauricio Macri criticised the Venezuelan government saying: "We must continue to work tirelessly and in a coordinated manner for the liberation of political prisoners, [the] respect for human rights and the restoration of democracy in Venezuela."
Shortly after Macri's address, Bolivia's President Evo Morales responded stressing that Venezuela's crisis was caused by "consumerism", not only in Latin America but across the world.
The trading bloc, comprised of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay as permanent members, suspended Venezuela indefinitely in August 2017 for "a rupture of the democratic order" following President Nicolas Maduro's move to go ahead with an election regarding the powers of constituent assembly.
