Protesters at the Standing Rock Reservation celebrated news of the Army Corp of Engineers' decision not to grant immediate easement to the Dakota Access pipeline at the site in North Dakota on Sunday.
The National Congress of American Indians, the organisation leading the protests against the pipeline, welcomed the decision with tribal Chairman Dave Archambault II noting that everyone present could "spend this winter with our families."
The Rock Sioux Tribe garnered the international support of thousands when it established a protest camp on its sacred site to prevent damage to the water in the local area. The construction of the 1,886-kilometre (1,172 mile) pipeline was initially halted by US President Barack Obama's administration in September following strong opposition to it and the US Army confirmed that it would not grant easement in a statement early on Sunday.
