Around 200 students protested against Front National presidential candidate Marine Le Pen at the Place de la Republique in Paris on Monday, a day following the first round of the presidential elections in the country.
Juliette, a member of UNEF student union, said "The main objective [of this protest] is to show that the National Front is not the party for youth, and to gather ourselves around the position that we should confront the far right, and mobilise against the party that puts our country and its population in danger."
Basma, a protester, added "The xenophobia, the sexism, the anti-Semitism, the racism – all this party calls for is to hate. It is all garbage in this party. This party belongs to the garbage."
Another protester, Anaelle, stated "I am only 17 years old and I did not get the opportunity to vote. But, for me it is simply impossible that we could allow the National Front to get through the elections. Anything that happens after that is just impossible."
In the first presidential election round, Le Pen came in at second position with 21.3 percent of the total vote, while En Marche's Emmanuel Macron was announced the winner, with 24.01 percent. Le Pen and Macron will face off in the second round scheduled for May 7.
