A large French police presence was visible at the border near the town of Menton on the boundary between France and Italy on Friday, as France reintroduced controls in an effort to tighten security ahead of the United Nations (UN) climate talks in Paris at the end of the month. The controls, which will be in place until December 13, will be installed at almost 300 road, rail, sea and air border points. Up to 30,000 police are set to be involved in the operations. US President Barack Obama and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping are among the 115 heads of state and government that are set to be present at the 21st United Nations Climate Change Conference, being held at Le Bourget from November 30 to December 11. French security services are paying particular attention to the prospect of left-wing groups travelling to Paris with a desire to protest during the conference.
