Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) is conducting a search and rescue operation for four sailors near Shumshu island in the Russian far eastern Kamchatka region, Sunday. According to EMERCOM Acting Chief in the Kamchatka region, Maksim Lepeshin, a self-propelled scow with five people on board, and headed from North-Kurilsk to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky was found overturned by the 'Adlan' while it passed by, around 6 kilometres (3,7 miles) from the island. One of the sailors was saved by the Adlan's crew and was given medical care. "At the present moment 'Adlan,' with a rescued sailor onboard, arrived at Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski harbour where he was met by emergency service workers, EMERCOM psychologists, police officers and members of an investigative committee, and the Marine Rescue Sub-Center," Lepeshin explained. Moreover, an MI-8 helicopter has been sent to explore the accident area with EMERCOM rescue workers on board, alongside a rescue ship that was sent to assist and haul the overturned scow.
