German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson held a joint press conference in Berlin on Friday, in which the former commented on the Friday morning's terror attack in Diyarbakir and the arrests of opposition politicians the previous day.
Steinmeier stated that Germany strongly condemns Diyarbakir's terror attack, and that no one questions Turkey's right to battle against terror, but that it "cannot be a justification for silencing the political opposition, even putting them in prison."
He went on to say that "because of the centuries-old relations between our countries and the relations of friendship between our peoples, between Turkey and Germany, it would be wrong to remain silent in this regard."
Steinmeier was speaking after 11 the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) politicians were arrested, including the party's leader Selahattin Demirtas, for not bearing testimony following alleged terror connections.
