Nissan workers gathered outside the Montcada i Reixac plant in Barcelona on Thursday to protest the Japanese multinational's decision to close its facilities in Catalonia.
The protesters demanded an industrial plan for Nissan's Catalan plant that would ensure they keep their jobs. According to reports, 3,000 people will lose their jobs as a result of the factory closures, which will affect between 15,000 and 20,000 people who depended on Nissan indirectly.
Workers have been on strike since May 4 because of Nissan's strategic plan which involves reducing 20,000 employees globally, or 15 percent of the total workforce.
The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation, Arancha Gonzalez Laya, said that they offered "all kinds of support, accompaniment, help and plans" to prevent the closure of Nissan in Barcelona, and assured that the government will not "throw in the towel".
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit Spain harshly, with 236,769 confirmed cases and 27,118 deaths according to the latest data provided by the Ministry of Health. The health crisis is linked to an economic crisis, which has resulted in the loss of thousands of jobs and is expected to continue in the coming months.
