Israeli security forces imposed age restrictions at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem, allowing only Palestinian men over 40 to attend Friday night prayers. Heavily armed Israeli security officers erected a perimeter of metal barriers around the compound, with those willing to go through the few entry points subject to searches of their person and checks on their documents. Many who were not permitted to enter the mosque conducted their prayers on the perimeter's edge. Violence has escalated in recent weeks in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories as long-simmering tensions over the al-Aqsa Mosque, and the continued construction of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, have come to a head. At least 30 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers since 1 October, and more than 1,700 injured, according to the latest figures from Palestinian medical sources. At least seven Israelis have been killed during the same period.
