Monks of Russia's Valaam Monastery continued manufacturing Italian cheeses on Valaam Island Monday, after sanctions and retaliatory measures which came into effect in August 2014 prevented Russians from importing the luxury dairy products from the EU. Valaam is currently producing five kinds of traditional Italian cheeses: mozzarella, morlacco, caciotta, smoked ricotta and bianca. The monks have also produced the more contemporary ‘Monastico,’ based on a secret Italian recipe. The cheese is currently being distributed among monks and pilgrims visiting the island and the monastery. However, the cheese is expected to enter the Russian market in the enar future.
