Libyan National Army forces loyal to the Government of National Accord announced from Abu Qurayn, Wednesday, that they had regained control over one of the main checkpoints south of Misrata from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants, inverting gains the militant group had made earlier this month. Libyan forces were seen engaged in fierce clashes with IS fighters in and around the urban area.
UN-backed Government of National Accord army spokesperson Mohamed al-Gasri said in his announcement, that armed forces with the support of Misarata brigades were able to liberate the strategic checkpoint after heavy clashes with IS militants.
The advances come at the same time as armed forces loyal to General Khalifa Haftar of the Libyan Ground Forces wait on the outskirts of Sirte preparing for a battle to liberate the city from IS.
IS militants from Sirte had taken control of Abu Qurayn, Zamzam and other areas about 90 km (70 miles) south of Misrata, and 140 km (85 miles) west of Sirte, on May 5.
