Up to 2,000 Lithuanians from the Russian, Polish and Belarusian communities held a rally in Vilnius on Friday, to protest against the closing of schools teaching in minority languages. The rally's organisers claim that hundreds of minority languages schools have been closed in the country over the last decade, making it harder for minorities to obtain secondary and higher education positions. In addition, demonstrators decried the lack of labour rights and the liberalisation of employment relations, which, they argue, will lead to increased job insecurity. The organisers expressed that this liberalisation is in contradiction of previous government promises.
