When Caitlyn Jenner appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair, the focus was rightly on her decades-long emotional journey to embrace her gender identity. It was not focused, however, on the practicalities of living in the world as a transgender person.
While coming out can be a profound, celebrated moment, the joy of living authentically doesn't always eclipse the immense pain transgender people experience when they encounter policies that say simply: you don't belong here. There is perhaps no better example of this than what happens when transgender people need to use the bathroom. This intimate act is now becoming a battleground for transgender acceptance. Inclusive policies demand that people radically rethink their understanding of gender. This month the Occupational Safety & Health Administration--or OSHA--released guidelines to the nation's employers, urging them to give workers access to bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity.
