04.05.2016
Students occupied the Legislative Assembly of the State of Sao Paulo at the end of its parliamentary session, Tuesday.
The demonstrators are calling for a Parliamentary Inquiry Commission to be set up in order to investigate alleged bribery in the food for high schools and technical colleges programme. Around 70 students are occupying inside the Assembly, claiming that they will only leave once an inquiry has begun.
The President of the Representatives Assembly Fernando Capez is already under investigation by the Civil Police and the Federal Prosecution Service as one of the main suspects accused of receiving bribes through a scheme that diverts money intended for school food. Capez was not in the House when the occupation began, but he met with the students later that night in order to develop an agreement.
As well as protesting this misuse of funds, students are also demanding better allocation of funds for education and educational resources within the public school system.
