The man accused of murdering nine black people at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church made his first public appearance since arrest.
During his bond hearing over closed-circuit TV, Dylann Storm Roof said little.
The family members of his victims, however, showered Roof with a cascade of pain and forgiveness.
Alicia Sanders, mother of the slain Tywanza Sanders, said, "you have killed some of the most beautiful people I have known."
She added, "every fiber of my body hurts, and I will never be the same."
Anothony Thompson, now a widower to Myra, said, "you hurt a lot of people. But I forgive you."
