30.07.2015
Former Soviet army officer Irek Hamidullin attended a US federal courthouse in Richmond, Virginia, on Thursday, accused of being a Taliban fighter. Hamidullin faces a total of 15 criminal counts including conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction and providing material support to terrorists. He has also been charged with leading a 2009 Taliban attack on an Afghan police base and a failed attack on US military helicopters. The trial was initially delayed three days by a judge's order after the US Defence Department submitted new evidence on Saturday. Judge Henry Hudson ordered the delay to allow Hamidullin's lawyers to examine the evidence. The unprecedented case marks the first time a military prisoner from Afghanistan will stand trial in a US federal court. If convicted, 55-year-old Hamidullin could face a life sentence.
