Libya: GNA forces in Sirte fight IS street-by-street

01.07.2016
Footage filmed on Friday shows Libyan militia members loyal to the country's UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) fighting the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants in the coastal city of Sirte.
GNA forces used tanks and machine-guns in the battle against the IS, as they continued the offensive which began on May 12, aiming to clear the city on a street-by-street basis.
Sirte became stronghold for extremist militants as Libya's security situation deteriorated following the fall of former dictator Muammar Gadaffi in 2011. Libya has had no official national army, but brigades of former rebels who once fought together against him have steadily turned against one another.
