arriving hugging mourners Thousands of mourners poured into the Uruguayan Legislative Palace to pay their respects to legendary author Eduardo Galeano in Montevideo, Tuesday. The official wake ceremony, held in the the grand Hall of Lost Steps, saw friends, family and politicians including President Tabare Vazquez, commemorate the writer, who died on Monday aged 74. Vazquez described Galeano as a "gladiator who gave voice to the most humble, who didn't have a voice." Galeano was best known for his 1971 book Open Veins of Latin America, which was translated into 20 languages and became a classic in the political literature in the region. The book became even more famous after the late Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, gave it as a gift to US President Barack Obama at the Summit of the Americas in 2009.
