Germany: Refugees wait hours to enter Germany from Passau border
16
29.10.2015
Thousands of refugees formed long queues at the German-Austrian border while waiting to cross over into the German town of Passau, Thursday. Thousands of refugees, predominantly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, arrived at the Passau border by train and on foot, where they had to wait for hours to continue their journey by bus. Police forces guarded the area with barricades and allowed small groups of refugees to cross at a time. Busses were waiting to take the refugees to temporary facilities around Germany where they can apply for asylum. More than 40 busses have crossed from Austrian to the German town of Passau in the last day alone, with around 7,000 refugees estimated to have crossed the border. Public outcry over the handling of over 500,000 migrants and refugees arriving in Europe this year has forced EU leaders to discuss the European Union's response to the current crisis. Member states have agreed to resettle an estimated eight percent of the number of refugees arriving in Europe, with leaders consenting to accommodate just 40,000 who have arrived in Greece and Italy.
