The UN called on Israel to "move swiftly with its investigation," after an Israeli airstrike allegedly killed eight members of the Al-Sawarkeh family earlier in the week, at a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York City on Friday.
"There is no justification to [attacking] civilians in Gaza," said UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, adding that "we are opposed to all killings of civilians, in this case, in the case of the Al-Sawarkeh family it's clearly a tragedy."
Haq said that UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov had sent his "heartfelt condolences" to the Al-Sawarkeh family and wished "a speedy recovery to the injured."
On Thursday, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and Israel reportedly agreed to a ceasefire, brokered by Egypt, halting a bout of violence. The ceasefire came into effect at 05:30 local time (03:30 GMT), hours after the Israeli airstrike allegedly killed eight members of the Al-Sawarkeh family, including children. Israeli claimed that it had targeted a militant.
Tensions have been escalating in the Gaza Strip since Tuesday, after Israel launched airstrikes to kill a senior PIJ leader Baha Abu al-Ata. Palestinian militants have fired some 450 rockets into Israel. The fighting has killed at least 34 Palestinians and injured dozens more.
