Crimean Tartars, joined by the region's Prime Minister Sergei Aksyonov, marked the 71st anniversary of the deportation of their people to central Asia under the leadership of Joseph Stalin, in Simferopol, Monday. Prayers meetings took place throughout the peninsula, held in memory of those who died during the deportations starting in 1944. Relatives brought flowers to the monument of Memory of the Crimean Tatar People, with participants releasing blue balloons to signify the victims of the mass deportations. Estimates vary but at least 238,000 Tatars were forcibly removed from their Crimean homeland on the pretext of being Nazi collaborators. Many thousands reportedly died, with Tartar authorities estimating over 100,000 perished.
